Journal Entry:
I have been here traveling for a year now and I have learned a lot about the colonies. People here are very hardworking and they don't complain about any job they had. Their houses are filled with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and stepchildren along with the average of 7 to 10 children per family. In the farmland people get up and start their day before the sun rises and they relied on themselves to get whatever they need to survive. In the cities they relied on trade to get food because of their good harbors and only 1 out of 20 colonists here live in cities.
They get their food by hunting and trading with the natives here. Those natives taught them how to cook and grow. Meat is the colonists favorite and it had to be salted, pickled, or smoked to keep from going bad. People are eager to move up in the world and what sets the classes apart is money, not family background. So, people could move from a lower class to a middle class and a middle to a high class by working hard and making money. At the very bottom of all the classes were the slaves and servants. Colonists used their time away from working to play with their neighbors and friends. They combine working and play in a certain game called "Bees" and "Frolks". Children play with simple toys like dolls, marbles, or tops.
For education, only the New England colonies have public schools, while in the middle colonies, a group of people have to decide if they want their childrens to have an education. In the southern colonies neighbors come together and decide if they want to hire a teacher. Religion is the most important part in their lives. Children read the bible from front to back several times. In new England, they worship sunday morning and if the Sabbath isn’t keeped they could be punished.
Some of their punishments are for serious crimes, they could be punished with death. Other crimes like theft and forgery, you could be whipped, jailed, or branded. On sundays you can’t work or travel or you will be given a fine, a little jail time or public humiliation.
That will be it for me for a little while. Till the next time.
